Singing lessons are lessons that a person can take to help them learn to sing correctly or improve their singing skills. When a person takes singing lessons, they are learning skills to use their voice as an instrument for musical pleasure.
While each teacher or voice instructor will have their own unique style, there are some things that all singing lessons seem to encompass. Most voice instructors will have their student start out each lesson by warming their voice up by doing vocal exercises. Some of these warm up exercises for the singing lessons may have the student making vocal sounds with their mouth closed or even focusing on one sound over and over repeatedly.
The direction of the singing lessons will go in different ways for different students depending on what they want to know and learn. One student may be interested in singing opera and be taking singing lessons for that while another student may want to focus on signing Broadway tunes. The teacher would need to individualize the singing lessons so that it suited each specific student's need to learn.
There are many things to learn in singing lessons that a voice instructor would cover with their student. They would need to learn about signing in different keys and a lot of knowledge about music such as chords and different scales that are in each key. This part of study is called music theory and goes hand in hand with the other parts of the singing lessons.
The voice instructor would also help their student to choose songs that are in their level of expertise and help them to become the best they could at those songs before advancing on to other choices in their singing lessons.
There is also a part of singing lessons that focuses on how the student can best make the piece of music their own. A better way to state this would be to say that the student will be taught and encouraged in their singing lessons in how they can best put emotion into the song to make it enjoyable for those that are listening.
An important part of singing lessons is that the student practice in between their singing lessons to get the most out of them. Some teachers may even suggest that the student bring a small tape recorder to their singing lessons so that they can listen to it while they are practicing throughout the week. This also allows the student to hear their own voice in song and reflect on the instructions given to them on how to improve by their teacher.
Another portion of singing lessons that the instructor will usually teach their student is how to care for their voice. This usually includes teaching them the importance of not overusing their voice or screaming or talking above normal speaking levels. They also usually advice their student on foods and drinks that can irritate their throat and vocal cords and what foods and drinks are soothing to an irritated throat.
Singing lessons include a wide variety of topics to be learned.
